Wouldn’t it be fantastic if this guy wasn’t the biggest fucking doucher on the planet and would actually listen to someone else’s points and arguments and actually take into consideration the time and effort of others? Here’s my opinion: it’s a good idea to source all art, regardless of it’s fanart or not. Pixiv artists/artists actually working in the industry have deleted entire galleries out of sheer frustration and stopped drawing entirely because people have stolen reposted and used their artwork over and over and over again, without their permission.
I think that fanart is kind of a tricky thing to tackle as a subject—I stopped drawing and selling fanart entirely once I heard how Marvel and Disney (and other companies) will go after their own artists who actually created the characters that they now own the copyrights to, just for drawing them.
It’s really unfair and I’m not justifiying letting these companies walk all over artists, but still.
I don’t have $15,000 sitting around to deal with any crazy lawsuits that come my way if a company finds out I drew a picture of Wolverine one time, and unfortunately here in America, you can get sued for everything and anything when it comes to copyright. Shit, Disney sued the hell out of a nursery school once because they had painted a picture of Mickey Mouse on a wall.
It’s different in Japan and other parts of Asia, where you totally can sell doujinshi and the lines between what constitutes violating copyright and what you can get away with are much thinner than they are over here.
TL;DR: Sean Gordon Murphy explains this better than I ever can, OP has great taste in bara but a shitty attitude towards artists and anyone in general, art should be sourced regardless if it’s fanart (although I personally believe everyone should stop selling fanart of copyrighted stuff out of sheer protest and to save themselves when the corporate overlords come to sue us into debt) and that’s the T.
